I'm not sure this is supposed to be written by me or by us. Honestly, sometimes it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Not because I'm unsure of who we are — but because that's simply just what we're made of.

Studio HDJ is — depending on the day — a creative studio, a one-man operation, a team assembled for the right brief, a long-running experiment in what it means to make things that actually matter. The studio started in 2010 under a different name that have went through more rebrands & reinventions than I care to count and eventually became something slightly larger than what it originally set out to be. Not by ambition, since we don't have one (at least the big big ones), but it happens by accumulation. A simpler way to put it: it's not by design, but by doing.

Our cumulative experience across campaigns, brands, spaces, systems and digital things has at this point probably surpassed an average human lifespan (well, what a claim ain't that). Some of that work was for names you'd recognise. A lot of it was for the ones that became recognisable because of the work. When we say we work across Brand, Campaign, Spatial & Digital; what that actually means: we figure out what something should feel like, and then we make it feel like that. The clients we work best with aren't defined by size or sector, but they are defined by how they think; they want something that doesn't exist yet. Something they can't quite name. They've already tried the safer option and found it forgettable. They're willing to sit in discomfort to get somewhere worth going.

That's who Studio HDJ is for.

The philosophy is simple: go against the tide. Not because doing it is cool and definitely not just for the sake of it. But because the conventional path is boooring and sometimes it doesn't leads to anywhere interesting — twenty years of doing this has only made that conviction stronger.

So, we don't do polish for the sake of polish but we do what makes you feel something. Most of the time, those two things overlap. When they do, we know which side to choose.
